ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the syndrome and treatment rules of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) based on the medical literature and cases with the help of TCM inheritance support system platform (V2.5), thus providing new ideas for TCM to treat COPD. MethodThe medical cases of TCM treating COPD were retrieved from China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and VIP China Science and Technology Journal Database. The medical cases that met the inclusion literature were collected in a new Word document, and then input into the TCM inheritance support system platform (V2.5) after data standardization. With the help of the algorithm carried by this software, the frequency statistics of "symptoms, syndrome types of TCM, Chinese medicine, and meridians of Chinese medicine" in the included COPD medical cases were performed, and the correlation analysis of the "prescription rules" in the included medical cases was carried out, thus excavating the potential core drug pairs and new prescriptions for the treatment of COPD. ResultA total of 103 articles were included with 126 medical cases and 131 diagnoses and treatments. According to statistics, the common symptoms of COPD were cough, expectoration, chest tightness, and asthma, and the common TCM syndromes included phlegm-heat obstructing lung, phlegm and blood stasis blocking lung, and lung-spleen Qi deficiency. The common TCM treatment methods included clearing heat and resolving phlegm, banking up earth to generate metal, and descending adverse and relieving dyspnea, among which the high-frequency Chinese medicines for the treatment of COPD were Pinelliae Rhizoma, Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Ephedrae Herba, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, and so on. The commonly used drug pairs included Asari Radix et Rhizoma-Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma-Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus-Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, etc. Twelve new prescriptions for the treatment of COPD were found. ConclusionTCM believes that COPD is a lung disease formed by external evil, phlegm, blood stasis, and other pathological factors, with cough, phlegm, and asthma as the main symptoms. The main syndromes of COPD are phlegm-heat obstructing lung, phlegm and blood stasis blocking lung, and lung-spleen qi deficiency. "Strengthening the upright and dispelling evil" is the basic principle of the treatment COPD. In clinical, TCM methods with dispelling phlegm and removing blood stasis, and tonifying lung, spleen, and kidney should be adopted to treat COPD.

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to explore the possible neuroprotective role of protocatechuic acid (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid) against rotenone induced locomotor, oxidative and mitochondrial dysfunction in mice. We also wanted to evaluate its ability to prevent neuronal degeneration in rotenone intoxicated mice. MethodsThirty mice, Albino strain, between 20 – 25 g, were included in the study. Group 1 is control group. It received sunflower oil 0.1 mL subcutaneously for two weeks. Group 2 received rotenone (1 mg / Kg) S.C. Group 3 also received rotenone (1 mg / Kg / day) S.C. in sunflower oil alternatively and Protocatechuic acid 10 mg / Kg B.W. P.O. for 2 weeks. Group 4 and 5 received rotenone as same in group 2 and Protocatechuic acid (25 mg / Kg) and (50 mg / Kg) B.W. P.O. After the finish of trial, open field test, stride length measurement, catalepsy, forced swim test, sucrose preference test and elevated plus maze test were conducted. ResultsExposure to Rotenone in mice led to reduction in peripheral and central movements. Pre-treatment with protocatechuic acid prior to rotenone exposure was able to maintain the both motor and non-motor symptoms of PD. However, protocatechuic acid was effective in the maintenance of dopaminergic and nondopaminergic pathways. ConclusionsThis study strengthens the fact that the protocatechuic acid in rotenone-affected areas might offer neuroprotection.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To know the incidence of heat stroke and explore it's prediction model in Pudong New Area of Shanghai. @*Methods@#An epidemiological investigation was conducted on heat stroke cases in Pudong New Area of Shanghai from 2013 to 2017. Daily temperature data during this period were collected to explore it’s influence. @*Results@#246 heat stroke cases were reported and investigated, 70.3% (173/246) of them were male. 170 cases are severe heat stroke, accounting for 69.1%. 28 patients died, accounting for 11.4% of all cases of heat stroke, and 16.5% (28/170) of severe heat stroke cases. Thermoplegia (56.5%, 96/170) was the most popular type among severe heat stroke cases. Heat prostration, heat cramps and mixed type account for 17.1% (29/170) , 12.4% (21/170) and 14.0% (24/170) respectively. Scatter plot and linear regression demonstrated that there was a significant linear relation between number of high temperature days and number of heat stroke cases (P<0.01) . And the prediction model is: Predictive number of annual heat stroke cases=β×Number of annual high temperature days+Intercept. Leave-one-out cross validation result shows that the predictive number of annual heat stroke cases from 2013 to 2017 were 85.7%, 90.9%, 83.3%, 91.9 and 84.3% respectively. @*Conclusion@#There was a significant linear relation between number of high temperature days and number of heat stroke cases in Pudong New Area. The related work arrangement for heat stroke prevention could be well planed according to the prediction model.
